Maybe enforce literature courses to police officers with lengthy discussions on works of art such as Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird so they may experience moral awakenings?
Peut-être imposer des cours de littérature aux policiers avec de longues discussions portant sur des chefs d'œuvre comme To Kill a Mockingbird (parfois traduit Ne tirez pas sur l'oiseau moqueur) pour leur réveil moral ?
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus is a white lawyer who represents a young black man who is wrongfully accused. The story is set in the Deep South where racial segregation is rampant. Highlighted in yellow in the first picture of this post is Atticus's response to Scout who fights at school against racist comments:
"But do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don't you let 'em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change ... it's a good one, even if it does resist learning."
Dans To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus est un avocat blanc qui représente un jeune homme noir accusé à tort. L'histoire se déroule dans le Sud profond où sévit une ségrégation raciale endémique. Dans la première image de cet article, la réponse d'Atticus à Scout qui se bat à l'école contre des remarques racistes est surlignée avec un crayon-feutre jaune :
« Mais je te demande une seule chose : marche la tête haute et ne te sers pas de tes poings. Quoi que l’on te dise, ne t’énerve pas. Tâche de te battre avec ta tête pour une fois … t’as une bonne tête, même si elle est un peu dure. »
And further down:
"Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win"
Let's note here that the word "licked" which appears a few times in the book means here "defeated, conquered, or humiliated on the battlefield" and the sentence thus refers to the ingrained racism that has long existed and to the days before the American Civil War when slavery was still prevalent.

Notons ici que le mot "licked" qui apparaît à quelques reprises dans le livre signifie ici « battus, vaincus, ou humiliés sur le champ de bataille » et la phrase évoque donc le racisme enraciné qui existe depuis longtemps et la période précédant la guerre de Sécession lorsque l'esclavage était encore fort répandu.
